STEAM Night 2024

Written by: Izzy Elliott

Salem Middle School is hosting a STEAM night on Tuesday, April 15, from 5-7 p.m. in the ROC gymnasium. Seventh and eighth grade students will be showcasing their science fair projects.

Sixth through eighth graders will be working with three different levels of robots. Sixth graders in digital citizenship will present monologues from their wax museum projects.

Agriculture teacher Chris Catlin will have baby chicks on display and also have eggs that are about to hatch for kids to see. MathCounts will have a hands-on activity and there will be a table where younger students can build a catapult and shoot cotton balls at a target or they can color a picture about the Food Web.

Someone from the DNR will bring raptors for everyone to see. The Extension Office and the Soil and Water office plan to have a table set up for everyone to do a hands-on-activity as well.

STEAM Lab Director Jessica Morgan said STEAM lab equipment like 3D printers and laser cutters will be out for people to see how they work.

“We are hoping to also have a song or two played for us by the 7th and 8th grade band members,” she said.

Everyone is invited to attend. Students will be explaining about their projects and showing what all they have learned this year to everyone that attends STEAM night.

While SMS has hosted a family science fair night before, this is the first year for an actual STEAM night. They want to include as many students as they can. Students really enjoy showing their parents and members of the community what they have learned throughout the year.
