American Heart Association Kids Heart Challenge Logo

February is American Heart Month and Mr. Jamey Wilson’s P.E. classes at Bradie Shrum Elementary participated in the Kids Heart Challenge program again this year.  (This program includes Jump Rope for Heart. In 2018, the American Heart Association renamed the program to Kids Heart Challenge.) Today, the top 5 fundraisers got to cash in their prize and throw a pie in Mr. Wilson’s face!

100% of BSE students participate in learning to jump rope and compete in classroom competitions. During P.E. class, students K-5 learn the basic forward and backward jumps but also learn more advanced partner jumps and some team jumps. They have competitions but the majority of the time in class is spent learning to master the skills.

Mr. Wilson said, “We participate in this because I feel like it is one of the easiest, cheapest and best cardiovascular workouts these kids can learn and can take with them throughout their lives. We use this time to also discuss what heart health is and things that are good for their hearts and things that are bad.”

The top fundraisers for 2021-22 are: Cash Gettelfinger, Kent Gettlefinger, Lincoln Corp, Adleigh Day and Axl Anderson. They were able to choose between chocolate and coconut cream pie to launch at Mr. Wilson’s face.

Each year Mr. Wilson offers this prize as an added incentive for those students who choose to fundraise.  BSE has participated in Jump Rope for Heart at least since Mr. Wilson started teaching at BSE 16 years ago. In recent history, BSE’s top fundraising year was 2013 when the students raised $11,800!
