Highlights of the Month

Above, two Bradie Shrum Upper Elementary students in Allison Brown's third grade classrooms are engaged in a reading assignment. Throughout all four schools during the first weeks of school, classrooms focused on reviewing and improving students' skills in language arts and mathematics to prepare for ISTEP testing in September.

During ISTEP testing, several SHS  teachers and students took advantage of the opportunity for learning outside the traditional classroom.  Upperclassmen who had already passed the exam participated in fieldtrips to colleges and other educational locations including Crane Naval Base, the Ali Museum and others.  Pictured at right are a group of students who joined history teacher Mark McKay for a three-day trip to Springfield, Illinois to learn from several sites related to Abraham Lincoln.  Activities and trips were also planned for freshmen and sophomores, such as a visit to Prosser School of Technology,  to break up the testing.

Stop by the Salem Invitational Band Contest on Saturday, October 6 as numerous marching bands from Southern Indiana compete on the Paul A Graves Athletic Field hosted by Salem High School's Marching Lions. The  Marching Lions have had a successful season so far this fall, including placing first of four bands in Class C and taking Best Music, Best Visual and Best Color Guard at the Floyd Central Invitational in mid-September. The band earned a Gold rating at the District Competition on Saturday, Sept. 29 which entitles them to compete in the  Regional on Saturday, October 13 at Warren Central in Indianapolis..

As a Standard Bearer School District, Salem Community Schools is focusing our school improvement efforts by Working on the Work.  Click above for more information on WOW efforts as well as professional development, collaborative teams, and other initiatives.
