The Salem Education Foundation was established in October 1991 to support Salem High School students by providing financial assistance to further their education after high school. On Honor Day in May 1992, the foundation presented the first scholarships totaling $850 to three graduating seniors. Through May 2004, the foundation has awarded a total of $306,800 in 388 scholarships to Salem High School graduates. The Salem Education Foundation also sponsors the annual "Taste of Salem" event, which is held to raise money for graduating Seniors.
The Foundation is managed by a local board of directors and is affiliated nationally with the Citizens Scholarship Foundation of America and the Dollars for Scholars program. The funds for the scholarships are raised through special events, especially the Salem Education Foundation Alumni Basketball Game in November. Other funding is through individual contributions and donations. Currently several individuals, alumni classes and local organizations have donated funds and set up scholarships and memorials to help Salem High School graduates.
All Salem High School seniors are eligible to apply for the awards, some of which are based primarily on need, and others primarily on the student's academic merit. Individual sponsors often specify other criteria. |
